Decision about Prolonging ISS Life to be Made in March
:: 02.02.2010
Administration of the USA supports Roscosmos initiative about prolonging orbital life of the International Space Station beyond 2015, Alexy Krasnov, Head of Roscosmos Human Spaceflight Directorate, told Interfax-AVN after telephone conversation between Roscosmos Head Anatoly Perminov and NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. "Government of the USA decided to prolong ISS life till 2020”, Krasnov says. “ISS partners have some time to think over the situation in the United States. It confirms that a single country can’t afford ambitious space programs, such as Bush’es Return to the Moon, all alone. This is a serious signal for us”. Final decision about extending ISS life is to be made in Tokyo, during the meeting of the Heads of the Agencies, in March. All ISS states shall provide their positive resolutions concerning this matter. ISS members include Russia and the USA, as well as ESA, Japan and Canada. US shuttle fleet is to be retired in late 2010. Starting from that time and until the USA gets its own commercial crew transportation means, Russian Soyuzes will serve as the only human space vehicle in the ISS program, maintaining delivery and return for the station crews, including US astronauts. According to Krasnov, major changes in the US space policy shall not impact Russian space program.
